till the cows come home

直訳　牛が家に帰るまで
意味　長い時間
I waited till the cows came home.
ずいぶん長い時間待っていた。

have a screw loose

直訳　ねじが緩んでいる
意味　ちょっとおかしい、どうかしている
He must have a screw loose to do that.
そんなことをするなんて彼はどうかしているに違いない。

big head

直訳　大きい頭
意味　自信過剰、自惚れ
He has a big head.
彼はうぬぼれている。

get cold feet

直訳　冷たい足になる
意味　怖気づく
I think I got cold feet.
怖くなってきたよ。

sweet tooth

直訳　甘い歯
意味　甘党
I used to have a sweet tooth.
私は昔、甘党だった。

beat around the bush

直訳　藪の周りを叩く
意味　はっきり言わない、まわりくどく言う
Don’t beat around the bush.
回りくどい言い方はやめなさい。

house of cards

直訳　トランプの家
意味　壊れやすいもの
His project fell apart like a house of cards.
彼の計画は脆くも崩れ去った。
