世界中に報道された米国大統領の広島訪問。

その時のスピーチを聴いてみました。

とてもわかりやすい英語ですので、ある程度正確に聞き取れると思いますが、テキストも掲載しておきます。

Seventy-one years ago, on a bright cloudless morning, death fell from the sky and the world was changed. A flash of light and a wall of fire destroyed a city and demonstrated that mankind possessed the means to destroy itself.

Why do we come to this place, to Hiroshima? We come to ponder a terrible force unleashed in a not-so-distant past. We come to mourn the dead, including over 100,000 Japanese men, women and children, thousands of Koreans, a dozen Americans held prisoner.

Their souls speak to us. They ask us to look inward, to take stock of who we are and what we might become.

【訳】

71年前、雲なく晴れた朝に、空から死が降ってきて世界を一変させました。眩しい光と炎の壁が街を破壊し、人類が自らを破壊する力を手に入れたことが明らかになりました。

我々はなぜここへ来たのでしょうか、広島へ。そう遠くない過去に恐ろしい力が解き放たれたことについて深く考えるためにここに来たのです。そして、亡くなった10万人を超える日本人の男性、女性、子供、数千人の朝鮮人、十数人のアメリカ人捕虜の方々を弔うためにここへ来ました。

彼らの魂が私たちに訴えています。私たちは何者で、私たちがどうなったのか、彼らは私たちにその本質を見つめるようにと言っているのです。
